Description

(Cavegirls Series, No. 9)

In the early morning chill he turned his sail to catch the first rays of the sun. Little Bird was already up and urging him onward, pointing her spear down towards the shore. With a touch of sluggishness he bobbed his head up and down in a gesture of pleasure at the thought of following her down the trail. She flitted ahead like the creature she was named after and raced ahead of him. Once he had adjusted to the morning air, he would be three times as fast as her, but for now he was content to follow.. just fast enough to keep a protective eye on her.

The splashing of the forest stream where the path ended made his mouth water. Good fishing was to be had where the fresh stream flowed into the tiny hidden lagoon. Some fishes awaited the possibility of food being washed down into the shallow salty pond, others could tolerate the semi-salt environment and sought shelter from thier less-adaptable hunters, others used the fresh water to loosen the parasites on thier skin. None of that was really known to him, of course. He just knew that food was often there.

He quietly padded down the trail to stalk up behind her. She was already watching the water, silently wading into the lagoon's edge. He scanned for danger, first the waters, in case anything they couldn't handle was hunting there... then the treeline around. Some of his larger sail-finned relations called these islands home as well; and thier teeth did not curve back, thin and hooked for fishing. Instead, they bore straight serrated fangs and would make a meal of him as readily as he would snap up a catfish...

Judging things to be safe, he watched the water's surface intently, looking from the girl's face to where she was staring.

There.

They felt each other tense imperceptably as the triangular fin sliced the water. A small one, but just enough for a meal for both of them. His mouth began to salivate even more as she slowly raised her bamboo-and-bone spear to strike...

And then the long, drawn-out moan came from back at the village. The large conch shell that was the message of trouble. Sharp sounds, like branches snapping... and he turned his head to see the black smoke rising from where they had just left.

The girl was already starting up the trail, gripping her spear, leaving the morning's bounty without a backward glance. She cried his name as she pelted ahead, the sounds almost as a sob.

With a lightning-fast flick of his neck, he struck the small shark with the movement that had given him his name and, holding the fish in his jaws, raced on after her...
